Katy’s Staff Pick: Sunflower by Vampire Weekend

vampire weekend

It’s very exciting to be able to share another song from my favorite band on 101x. This song is from their newest album Father of the Bride which came out in May of 2019. This album also recently won “Best Alternative Album” at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. It was their first studio album in over 5 years. For a lot of huge Vampire Weekend fans like myself, the wait felt never-ending. But with the first features ever from the band and a fresh new sound from them, this album did not disappoint. Over half of the album features Danielle Haim, the lead singer of the band ‘HAIM’, a trio of sisters from Los Angeles. One of the biggest changes in the band is a “jam band” sound which is prominent in this version of the song performed at their Austin City Limits live taping.

This particular song features an up and coming producer, songwriter and artist, Steve Lacy. He’s only 21 years old and has worked with artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Solange and Kali Uchis. With rotating camera angles and split screens, directed by Jonah Hill the music video is a true work of art. Taking place in two New York staples; Zabar’s and Barney Greengrass, this music video evokes the spirit of Father of the Bride. I hope you enjoy this song as much as I do and if you haven’t already, be sure to check out Vampire Weekend’s 4th studio album, Father of the Bride

Here’s the music video for “Sunflower” by Vampire Weekend.
