The rock world mourns the loss of longtime Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who was found dead in his Bogota hotel room Friday night. He was 50. The Foo Fighters were in South America to play a series of festival dates, including Friday night at the Colombian capital’s Festival Estereo Picnic. Their appearance was cancelled. The band issued this statement via Instagram:

Hawkins, the lone native Texan in the Foo Fighters lineup, joined the band in 1997 after a stint behind drums in Alanis Morissette’s touring band. Over the years, his profile within the Foo Fighters increased dramatically, with he and Dave Grohl trading lead vocal duties regularly during live sets in recent years. Hawkins’ prowess as a singer/primary songwriter was evident too in his work with his own band, The Coattail Riders. He also fronted a much-publicized covers act, Chevy Metal.

Taylor Hawkins leaves behind wife Alison and three children. A cause of death has not been disclosed.
