So, it's happening. All the bands that went on "Hiatus" are slowly returning. I.E.: Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blink 182, Rage Against the Machine, At The Drive In, The Refused.... AND OF COURSE, SOUNDGARDEN!!! Now, this is the FIRST NEW studio track they have released in over a decade! (the track they released last year was something that was supposed recorded back in the day. They just finished it up and released it.) So, the new track is featured on the new "The Avengers" movie soundtrack. It's just a tidbit to get you ready for their first FULL LENGTH release in over a decade later this year! In the meantime, you can download the track for FREE right HERE!
And you can also hear it here:

Walk the Moon is a 4-piece out of Cincinnati who have hooked up in the past with the likes of Young The Giant and Weezer on the road behind their debut indie release i want, i want. Recently signed by RCA, the band was here for SXSW '12, and their first major label effort will be an EP led off by the amazing single from the band's 2010 release. Last summer, our Andy Langer called "Anna Sun" one of Esquire's "30 Songs Every Man Should Listen To." Check out the amazing video for it below, and keep an ear out for it on 101X!
Skrillex: a case for him on 101X...& my staff pick

Sonny Moore was 15 when he hooked up with Floridians From First To Last as their vocalist/rhythm guitarist last decade. After some success there on the Alternative Press/Warped Tour/Hot Topic scene, Moore went solo...as "himself" in the post-hardcore lane that FFTL had occupied, but simultaneously as the electronic artist Skrillex. Skrillex's first EP arrived less than two years ago, and he's since piled on three more, while scoring three Grammys & picking up remix/production/collaboration assignments all over the music world (from Korn to British folk darling Ellie Goulding--who he might be dating). And while the term "dubstep" might induce nausea and/or impromptu cases of Tourette's among folks you know, here's my case for the kid (now 24): his music's fresh & energetic, and not far out of the pocket that contains the rest of the electronica that 101X has supported (Prodigy, Crystal Method, Fatboy Slim, etc.) over the years, AAANNNNDDD he ...

Lana Del Rey--staff pick

The album (Born To Die, out today) doesn't suck as much as we thought it would, and that doesn't matter. 101X Staff Picks are about a single song, not an artist or a larger body of work, and "Video Games'--daddy's money, corporate meddling, blogospheric uproar and SNL be damned--is and was always amazing.

Ah, December. The time for holiday cheer, Jimmy Stewart movies, and the inevitable ranking of the year's pop culture offerings. Like the adage goes, opinions are like… hairstyles. Everyone's got one. OK, so maybe that's not exactly how the saying goes, but you get the idea. Who better to offer their takes on this year's cream of the crop than the folks behind the the mics? We asked the on-air staff to come up with their picks for 2011, and we'll be revealing them over the next few days. So just what struck the fancy of your beloved 101X jocks this year? You'll just have to read on to find out!

My latest (12.14) is from Gotye, aka Wally De Backer. Gotye has a full time gig in one of Australia's better-known bands, The Basics, but maintains a solo career alongside that. He's released three albums as Gotye (pronounced GO-tee-ay...or like Gaultier, if you're fashion-minded), and album number three has blown up. Making Mirrors has scored 11 ARIA nominations (the Australian equivalent of the Grammys), & my staff pick has gone quintuple-platinum down under. "Somebody That I Used To Know" features a guest vocal turn from Gotye's fellow southern hemisphere star, Kimbra, and one of the more remarkable videos I've seen in a while. See it below.
