The Whigs are a three-piece out of Athens, Georgia, who have jumped through all the typical indie-rock royalty hoops, receiving accolades from Rolling Stone (“best unsigned band in America”), Fader (“Athens’ most-likely-to-succeed”), and Spin (“artist of the day”, last September).   Still, they sound remarkably “get-able” by the mainstream, meeting somewhere between Kings of Leon and something classically-Athens.  Some of us were lucky to see ‘em play at SXSW ahead of My Morning Jacket; we get another look at the Whigs when they play Antones on 5/10 with our friends What Made Milwaukee Famous.  Their second release is Mission Control…from it, my staff pick is “Right Hand On My Heart.” - Lawless

Lawless Staff PickAtmosphere - “You”
Toby - Music Director

Yes.  AGAIN!  I have staff picked Atmosphere...  I can't help it.  I love the band.  For many reasons.  It's everything Hip Hop should be.  Honest.  Dark. Compelling.  Challenging.  Introspective.  Instead of rapping about sweat running down his balls, he talks about things like addiction, social and internal struggles.  You can't help but finding yourself identifying with at least 1 if not all of the songs.  The album is out as of 4-22-08.  You can grab it on our I-Tunes music store.  It's called, When Life Gives you Lemons, Paint that Shit Gold.  I think it says it all.  The track I've chosen is called "You".  No video out for that particular song as of yet, but you can check out a couple of videos from the new album: Youtube: Shoulda Known
Youtube: Guarantees Atmosphere will be in Austin Friday, May 2nd and Saturday, May 3rd at Emos.  Get tix before they are sold out.

The Welsh metal-core band Bullet For My Valentine has spent most of the past two years taking over the world with massive U.K., European, U.S. and worldwide tours, sharing the stage with Guns N Roses, Metallica and Iron Maiden, playing the Main Stage at just about every rock festival on the planet, and seeing their 2006 debut album The Poison - an album London's daily The Sun called "One of the finest debut albums in rock history" - sell more than one-million copies worldwide – 350,000 in the U.S. alone – a very rare achievement for an emerging band.

On January 29, 2008, Bullet For My Valentine is set to return with Scream Aim Fire (20-20/Jive/SonyBMG), the band's highly anticipated sophomore release. The 11-track assault was produced by Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Funeral For A Friend) and recorded at Sonic Ranch just outside of El Paso, TX in early 2007, and is, according to front man Matthew “Matt” Tuck, “really melodic heavy metal…catchy, hooky choruses and full-on vocals with the music being very in-your-face and heavy…it's a lot more up-tempo than The Poison, a lot more aggressive.”
