Zeale - "Hope Dies"

I have a feeling. A VERY STRONG feeling that one day this kid will be HUGE. Like, watching him on the Grammy's huge. I've been saying it for a couple of years now. You should get aboard this train now, because it ain't stopping. From his original material Debut E.P., Wake Hell or Make Peace, It's called "Hope Dies" and features the LOVELY Patricia Lynn. (Formerly of The Soldier Thread, but has a new project called The Wind and The Wave)

Lawless Staff Pick: Empire Of The Sun's "Alive"
Posted
6/7/2013 10:07:00 AM
Australia's electro-psych duo Empire Of The Sun return with their second album this summer. Its June release coincides with Bonnaroo and Kimmel appearances this month. Ice On The Dune follows the 2008 debut, Walking On A Dream. The latter featured "We Are The People", the backing track for a ubiquitous VIZIO commercial in the States and a pretty massive hit worldwide--to most of us, it was "that MGMT song that I can't find", referring to the similarities in sound between Empire and Oracular Spectacular-era MGMT (though it's worth noting that the two bands happened almost simultaneously, and Empire principals Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore had been honing their sound for years--Steele making guest appearances in the latter's outfit, Pnau, between efforts with his own band, The Sleepy Jackson). The new Empire Of The Sun album features "Alive", which is my staff pick. Grab a remixed version here and check out the video below!

Even though a bazillion trillion bands invade our home from all over the world every March, some of the best are from right here in the ATX. We call them Homegrown Heroes.

Marmalakes
18th Floor at Hilton Garden Inn - Wednesday, March 13, 9pm
They’ve been charming the pants off of audiences with their high energy performances and tight harmonies since 2009. Look for a new record later this year, produced by Danny Reisch (Shearwater, Bright Light Social Hour).

Biffy Clyro's "Black Chandelier"

The Biffy return with a new American release the week of SXSW Music. Opposites is already available in the band's native UK as an ambitious double-cd project. Here, we'll get a more compact 14-song version; both include my staff pick, "Black Chandelier", below. The Scotsmen are in North America for a run of April dates surrounding their two Coachella appearances. There's nothing nearby...but it's worth noting that the band's online tour itinerary is presently vacant the week of the US release (and we are at the music business' epicenter that week)....

101X Staff Picks: Best Albums of 2012
Posted
12/4/2012 11:30:00 AM
It's December, and you know what that means... the holiday season is here. Before you're bombarded with an earful of holiday cheer (we can hear the echoes of "Jingle Bell Rock" in our heads), we want to offer you a glimpse into some of the finer musical stylings that 2012 had to offer. And who better to offer their takes on this year's cream of the crop than the folks behind the the mics? We asked the on-air staff to come up with their picks for 2012, and the result is an eclectic take on what our staff was digging this year. That's right, we've got a run down of the musical can't-misses of 2012, just in time to add them to your holiday wish list. So just what was it that struck the fancy of your beloved 101X jocks this year? You'll just have to read on to find ...

Chillville Staff Pick - The xx
Posted
11/8/2012 9:46:00 PM

The first time The xx was played on Chillville was in 2009 for "Monty's Catch of the Day". It was the Chris Isaak-esque track "Infinity" off their critically acclaimed and Mercury Prize Winning album, XX. Little did we know that this band would grow up in front of our eyes to be one of the biggest bands on the show. Jamie Smith (Jamie xx) has been quite the busy guy since the first release, becoming one of the hottest DJ's/producers. He has remixed the likes of Radiohead, Florence + the Machine, and Glasser, which all have been played on Chillville. He also worked with the late, great Gil Scot-Heron on a fantastic collaborative album called We're New Here, which mixes old-school with the new. Jamie's experience has become the biggest impact on the band's sophomore release of 2012's Coexist, especially since he produced the entire album. He has done a great job ...
Blondfire's "Where The Kids Are"
Posted
11/5/2012 4:17:00 PM
Early arrivals at 101X's official South By Southwest showcase last spring were treated to the danceable indie pop of my latest staff pick, Blondfire. Blondfire is an LA-based duo, comprised of siblings Bruce and Erica Driscoll. The duo have performed as Blondfire since '04 after a well-received stint in a band called Astaire (if you're sitting on any Dawson's Creek soundtrack releases, you may have a couple of Astaire songs). Blondfire recently signed with Warner Brothers Records and are planning to deliver their second album. Find my pick, "Where The Kids Are", as an indie-release single, ahead of the release of their WB debut next year. Check out the video below!
The Sword - "Apocryphon"
Posted
10/9/2012 1:29:00 PM
Austin band The Sword have played with some of the biggest bands in the world, but never have moved away from what garnered attention in the first place, good riffs and catchy stoner metal tunes. Their fourth full length Apocryphon hits store October 22nd and marks their finest sounding release to date. I enjoyed every single one, but this album has a recorded clarity the others previously lacked. As always you have to be the judge, but you will not be disappointed, my staff pick from The Sword, the title track from their latest album – ‘Apocryphon.’
Baroness' "March To The Sea"
Posted
8/11/2012 12:16:00 PM
Being hailed as their ‘crossover’ album, and one of the best of the year, the Savannah, GA band Baroness stepped from progressive heavy metal obscurity and all the way into another realm on their latest release Yellow and Green. A double album of no small stature, this record could hold the keys to the kingdom, being successful in the eyes of metal critics, indie critics and fans alike. Look for Baroness to be one of the featured acts at this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest in November, my staff pick is their first single “March to Sea.” It's #17 in the console below.
introducing...Youngblood Hawke
Posted
7/31/2012 12:23:00 PM
Last time we saw the principals in Youngblood Hawke, they were playing behind a white rapper named Jarvis in the LA surf-party outfit Iglu and Hartly at SXSW '09. Jarvis dropped a few f-bombs on our airwaves, in fact, from the couch at Buffalo Billiards one afternoon--before he wound up being hauled in by APD for running naked through the Hilton and punching a security guard that night. Exit Iglu and Hartly soon after that--no great loss, as the band pretty much sucked. Well, mostly. They had some great melodies that got kinda lost behind that idiot standing in front of the band. So, with said idiot out, I&H founding members Simon Katz and Sam Martin have launched Youngblood Hawke. There's been a handful of songs floating around the web ahead of a planned August EP release, the latest being my staff pick, "We Come Running." Keep an ear out on 101X, and check it out below.

Celebration Rock is Vancouver's Japandroids 2nd full length. My fave record in a few years. My latest staff pick "The House that Heaven Built" could be the anthem of the summer. Couldn't find a vid, so I've hooked up the mp3. Enjoy!
TOADIES!

The Toadies are a Texas tradition. If you were born in Texas, you HAVE to like the Toadies. It's printed right on your birth certificate if you were born after '94. (Don't believe me? Check. I'll wait)
Anyhooo. They are back with their 4th full length LP, Play. Rock. Music. out July 31rst. What started off to just be a quick EP ended up and LP. It seems the guys were just having too much fun and the creative juices were flowing. They were joined in the studio by local legend, musician and producer, Frenchie Smith at his Bubble Studios in Austin, TX.
What we have so far is pure magic. Real dirty texas rock n roll! "Summer of the Strange" is the name of the new track and you HAVE to check out the video. (by the way, there is an ADULT version of this video, but I could not ...
