St. Lucia's "Elevate"--a Lawless Staff Pick

Posted 11/13/2013 4:32:00 PM

St. Lucia looks like a band in the video below, but it's really the nom de plume of South African-born, Brooklyn-based Jean-Philip Grobler. He's cranked out a pair of EPs over the last couple of years, and followed that up this fall with a debut full-length, called When the Night.  As mentioned on the air, St. Lucia delivers a flawless modern take on mid-80s new wave, much like M83 before it--and like Gonzalez, Inc.,St. Lucia has applied those sounds via remixes to various singles from other artists--including Foster The People, Passion Pit, and more.  The video for "Elevate" features real footage from the outfit's eviction party on the roof of their Brooklyn rehearsal space.  Keep an eye peeled for Sharon Jones and various Dap-Kings here and there, as they were also booted from the building in the name of "sprucing up the neighborhood."

NO CONTROL Radio Staff Pick

So there was this band. they really liked Satan, and wore sacriligious costumes to that effect and sang songs about demons, but were not really that metal, just had lots of metal themes. Ghost BC is a band that people are becoming familiar with, sort of, no one knows who they really are other than their on stage personas. Their leader Papa Emeritus II does not shy from speaking, but has never fully revealed his identity behind the mask. They have had two full albums and a won critical acclaim from nearly everyone, now they are touring with Avenged Sevenfold and the Deftones and released the EP where you find my Staff Pick. This is a cover song, the original artist being Austin legend Roky Erickson, and it features none other than Dave Grohl on the skins. It is light and enjoyable and totally Ghost BC.
