United States Coast Guard Auxiliary to Provide Free

Vessel Safety Checks on 25 August

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary announced today its sponsorship of Vessel Safety Checks on August 25, 2013 at Cedar Breaks Park in Georgetown.

A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is a bow to stern safety check of a boat conducted by trained Vessel Examiners designed to help boaters to be safer on the water. This is a free public service of the U.S. Coast Guard conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliarists from Flotilla Austin. Federal, state and local regulations require certain safety equipment be carried on-board a vessel (e.g., fire extinguishers, life jackets, visual distress signals, etc.).  Qualified Vessel Examiners inspect boats to ensure that this required safety equipment is present and in functional condition. The Examiners also check for any basic mechanical problems, make sure registration and documentation are current, and offer information on a variety boating safety issues.  The VSC is performed free of charge and without any legal obligations or penalties. If a potential problem or violation is discovered, the Examiner will give the boater options and information for correcting it.

Boaters that have received VSCs report that the check opened their eyes to potential safety hazards that they would have never thought of on their own. The Vessel Safety Checks enable boaters to take command of their own boating safety.

The local event will take place along Cedar Breaks Park Road near the launch boat ramp area at Cedar Breaks Park on August 25, 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed, all-volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard. The Auxiliary has grown to over 32,000 members who daily support the Coast Guard in all its missions except military operations and direct law enforcement. The Austin Flotilla has eleven Central Texas lakes in its coverage area from Lake Buchanan to the north down to Lake Bastrop in the south and of course Lake Austin and Lake Travis.
