101X Podcasting FAQ

Chillville airs Sunday mornings from 9am - noon, crafting a soundtrack worthy of the laid-back vibe Austin exudes on a Sunday morning hosted by long-time Austin radio guy Ray Seggern aka Raydog.

It features a mish-mash of styles including, but not limited to down-tempo electronic, acoustic, flashback, ambient, indie-pop, brit-pop, etc. (heavy on the etcetera part).

Prominently featured artists include The Flaming Lips, Zero 7, Radiohead, Morcheeba, Coldplay, Soul Coughing, , Bjork, PJ Harvey, Portishead, Death Cab For Cutie, Massive Attack, and the Cocteau Twins.

Greetings From Chillville

Raydog here. So it's great to be back on the radio in Austin. It's been like three years. So those first few programs were a little wobbly but it feels like we're finding our rhythm. The feedback to the show has been AWESOME.

Predictably, there was a smattering of flak from chill "purists" who just want the electronic stuff. Past that, I've gotten tons of email from people who are embracing the Chillville vibe. They've even turned me onto a lot of new music I had never heard, which is the only reason I got into radio in the first place, and it's certainly the reason why I am on the radio at this point.

After many years in radio and now a few out of it, to have a cool little free-form show, in the morning no less...well, that suits me just fine. I think it may shape up to be some of my best work ever. I'm totally stoked.

What the hell kinda name is "Raydog" for a white guy with no jump-shot and only marginal rapping skills?ray and his dog

Raydog was one of 101X's original deejays when the station launched in June of 1995. Before that he was one of the original deejays on Austin's first commercial alternative rock station, and before that he was one of the original deejays at UT's campus radio station.

His "Homegroan" show was a winner in the Austin Chronicle's Best of Austin awards, and in SXSW's Austin Music Awards. He also ran a record label (Reservoir Records) whose "Homegroan" compilations featured some of the early releases by Austin mainstays Spoon, David Garza, and Bob Schneider, and whose "101-Xmas" compilation CD featured rare Christmas music from The Flaming Lips, Butthole Surfers, Lee Ving's Fear, Sixteen Deluxe and more.

Outside of radio, he also ran his own weekly newspaper (The Tulsa Independent... RIP), and he partnered with legendary Austin concert promoter Jim Ramsey to put on the first Austin concerts by Pearl Jam, Jane's Addiction, Stone Temple Pilots, Live, Public Enemy, Tool and Rage Against The Machine (all at The Back Room). Also used to be an assistant manager at the Ice Rink at Northcross Mall where, yes, he drove the Zamboni everyday (no sh-t). The only girls Ray chases any more are daughters Cassidy and Stevie (and, of course, wife Kelly). He makes his living during the week doling out marketing and advertising advice to owner-operated businesses across the US and Canada.
