(2/16/14) Monty's Catch of the Day - Twin Shadow
Posted 2/16/2014 8:25:00 AM

For about the past year, Twin Shadow (aka George Lewis Jr.) has been doing a series of cover songs that have been posted to his YouTube page accompanied with a simple video. He has cleverly titled it the UNDER THE CVRS series, which includes Twin Shadow's take on Springsteen's "I'm on Fire", U2's "With or Without You", and Tori Amos' "Silent All These Years" to name a few. As a matter of fact, you may have heard us play versions of 10CC's "I'm Not In Love" and Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" on past Chillville shows, both covered by Lewis Jr. On Valentine's Day, Twin Shadow released a cover of The Smiths' "There is a Light That Never Goes Out", which is not only the latest track in the series, but also today's catch. This beautiful rendition is just a perfect way of taking a new-wave classic and transforming it into a chilled out electronic song without disrespecting the original. It features Samantha Urbani who is best known for her work with another Chillville musician, Blood Orange. Twin Shadow will be coming to Austin for SXSW this year, and it would be a real treat to see Lewis Jr. perform some or all of these great covers in his set. Check out the video below of Twin Shadow's take on The Smiths' "There is a Light That Never Goes Out", featuring Samantha Urbani. Good things!
