The Red Hot Chili Peppers announced the return of their longtime guitarist John Frusciante via Instagram on Sunday night (December 15th). The band will be parting ways with Josh Klinghoffer after a decade of playing together. “The Red Hot Chili Peppers announce that we are parting ways with our guitarist of the past ten years, Josh Klinghoffer,” the band stated in the post. “Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love. “We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us.”

The reunion marks Frusciante’s third stint with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He originally joined the band in 1988, after the death of Hillel Slovak, and was featured on Mother’s Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik. He departed from the band in 1992 and returned six years later, appearing in 1999’s Californication, 2002’s By The Way, and 2006’s Stadium Arcadium. He left the band for the second time in 2009 and was replaced by the band’s backup touring guitarist at the time, Josh Klinghoffer.
